Rothermel
Cooke was founded by Valerie Cooke and Rolf Rothermel in London in 1967. It was first registered in the Turks and Caicos Islands
in 1981, and now practices as RBS architects with principals Wendy Been and Rolf Rothermel. Rothermel Cooke continues as an
associate office in London and is a UK registered practice
RBS and its associates provide
a complete range of consultancy services anywhere in the world, often acting as lead consultants in areas such as planning,
architecture, interior design, cost planning, structural engineering, project management and MEP services. Where appropriate,
RBS works with its associate practices and sub-consultants.
RBS, with its association
with IOS Partners, also offers extensive expertise in areas such as Aviation and Airports; Postal and Telecom; Energy and
Utilities; Ports and Rails; Social Securit,; Pension & Insurance Administration Reform.
Awards
Housing in Brixham Harbour 1972; one of the founding schemes in the revival of the Neo-Vernacular style, widely
published (including in ' Hill Housing‘ Granada) and reviewed. Despite being considered at variance with the spirit
of the times, the avant-garde magazine ' Architectural Design ' awarded it a Special Award in its annual review of
outstanding projects.
First Prize in competition open to all registered architects in
the world, organized and judged by an international jury appointed by the UIA under conditions of total anonymity. Conference
Centre and 422-bed Hotel in Abu Dhabi. Since 1977 RCS, apart from one other practice, remain the only UK firm to have won
such a competition.
First Prize for Hotel and Conference Centre in Cairo. Limited competition
by invitation from Government of Arab Republic of Egypt.
Certificate of Exceptional Merit,
European Heritage Year, for offices in Magdalen Street, Norwich, England.
RBS projects
have been featured world-wide in books, magazines, newspapers, TV and radio profiles and interviews, and as part of the British
Council's films for distribution abroad. The North Peckham Estate (a $140,000,000.00 programme) was a landmark approach
to re-planning a crime & vandalism plagued area. Using the ideas of Jane Jacobs (‘Life and Death of American Cities’)
and Alice Coleman (‘Utopia on Trial’) this large public housing area started a process of transformation to protected
private garden spaces, security measures & elimination of centralized parking. Prof. Coleman was engaged to act as consultant
on the re-planning.
